Do you know any war veterans?
Submitted by Fightin' 6th Marines.
Yes, I do. That should be obvious :)
What is the most creative gift you have ever given or received?
Submitted by Nacwolin.
This is an easy one.
I love orchids. They are beautiful, hard to keep up at times, but well worth the effort it takes to keep them healthy.
One day, Brandon printed out... about 50 or so wallet-sized pictures of orchids. He cut them to size, and wrote on the back of each one, what he loved about me. Not only that, but they were in order. So, the trail led from our front door to the bedroom, where a chocolate rose waited for me, along with my hubby. That, my friends, was BEYOND creative.
Then there's my birthday, where he bought a bunch of balloons and decorated them with a sharpie, then hung up streamers all around our living room. :D
What are the weirdest song titles in your playlist or music collection?
Submitted by Charline.
Caviar: "Tangerine Speedo". It is actually a song about tangerine speedos.
King Missile: "Detachable Penis". Self explanatory.
Muse: "Pink Ego Box"
Panic! at the Disco: "Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking her Pants Off". Just because it is SUCH a freakishly long name.
They Might Be Giants: "Particle Man"
Tool: "Hooker With a Penis"
Tool: "Die Eier von Satan". The eggs/balls of satan. It's quite funny, because I think Tool did it on purpose. They make fun of people who blindly follow others - well. This song sounds seriously angry and terrible... but it's a recipe. For "Satan Balls" basically... they sing all of the ingredients, how long to bake, etc... in German.
I have some icky cramps. Before I had Becky, they were terrible. Even a few months afterwards, they were terrible. Then I got back on birth control and my body corrected itself. Now, though, the cramps radiate into my back and they don't make life too easy. I did get to take a hot bath tonight, sans baby. Brandon even put her to bed - a rarity, since they usually go to sleep at the same time. She went to sleep easily for him :D.
We had soo much fun today - it's the little things. I bought a green ball at the 100 yen store for Becky. Well, it was in the shower (Becky had thrown it in there earlier in the day) so Brandon threw it out. We kept throwing it at each other, kind of playing 'monkey in the middle' with Becky being the monkey of course ;D. Then I got the bright idea to throw it IN the shower while Brandon was showering. He threw it back out and got me in the face (it's a soft ball and he throws like a girl, don't worry). Before long I wasn't dry anymore & Becky's hair was a wet mess. hehe. I made penne pasta + vodka cream sauce which is a huge hit in this household. It is so yummy! He helped me do the dishes, too. I did about four loads of laundry today and I still have to do diaper laundry tomorrow morning, but that's easy. People ask me why I cloth diaper - I say it's economical. it is. We are flat broke, have been for a few days, and here we have this never-ending supply of diapers. Yay :D
So... he has a new job. Again. He basically is helping the camp commander's secretary with um, secretary duties? Needless to say it's a cush job. Funny, because we were just talking about that last week, since he helps her (the secretary) out so much, they should create a job for him to be HER secretary!
Tomorrow, I go to the doc for insomnia. I hope they don't prescribe Ambien again. I would rather have something that isn't considered a narcotic and therefore rarely prescribed (or reluctantly). I hate taking Tylenol PM, etc. anything with diphenhydramine because - while it does put me to sleep - I am left groggy no matter how much or how little sleep I get.
Squee! I can't wait for this weekend. We're having a BBQ... lots of people coming over. Then Okinawa World on Saturday morning and *drumrollthisisthebestpart!!!!* Sunday... ALEX TREBEK WILL BE HERE! I am SO excited. Brandon practically had a heart attack when I told him his idol would be here :D. I told him he is SO getting a picture with Mr. Trebek. I wonder how many Jeopardy nerds besides ourselves will be there. hehe.
Now, I am exhausted. Time to take my tired self & tired hubby to bed.
What was the worst job you ever had?
Submitted by salaryman.
The worst job I ever had was at Labor Ready, Inc. I made pretty good money - around $10 an hour, had health benefits, but my hours were awful and the pay was not worth all of the emotional effort. Labor Ready employs daily laborers - usually people just out of prison, crack/meth/drug-of-choice heads, etc. I think there were a couple of people that were just doing it because they were bored and mommy and daddy had given them a trust fund (yes, I'm serious). They all made minimum wage, usually. A few made a very good wage, but that was rare. I worked every day of the week, and I was on call at night. So say we had a job to fill at 2am. I ask Joe and Bob (fictional names) if they can do it. They are happy for work at night, because night shift gets a .50c differential per hour. At 3am I get a page, and the workers haven't shown up. I call them - no answer. I call my boss - he doesn't know what to do either. So, we end up getting screwed and the next day, Joe & Bob don't even care. Saturday mornings I'd roll my ass out of bed, kiss Brandon (he was still just my boyfriend at the time - wow, how weird!) goodbye, and go to work. At 5:30 in the morning, I would go to work. It was usually quiet, but because I was up so early I'd have to drink two cups of coffee. Which, in turn, would send me to the bathroom with an upset stomach. I'd fill jobs, and then at 9:30AM I would go home. I'd spend a few hours with Brandon, or if he had duty, with my roomates or friends. Then at 4:30, back to work to pay the guys (rarely women), and I'd have to work until 7pm. This is on top of business meetings 50 miles away (gas was reimbursed), and since it was just my boss and I - I'd end up working a lot. He kept buying cheap cars and then was unable to make it to work. Many times I'd work from 5:30 in the morning until 7 at night and still be on call. I did get paid quite a bit of OT while working there. However, I would never recommend working there. It's a shithole and despite the okay pay... it's not worth it.
I quit after nearly a year of working there out of sheer exhaustion.
If you could have one superpower, what would you choose?
Submitted by J.T.
I would like a God superpower - one that unites everyone, stops war, and doesn't run out of natural resources. Ahh, but a dream...
Do you buy products made locally? Is there anything made in your area that you love?
I buy produce that is grown locally - mostly because it's FRESH! The quality of the produce we get in the commissary (on-base grocery store) is pretty crappy and goes bad within a couple of days - even in the fridge. It's only slightly more expensive to buy it out in the local market but tastes so much better! Especially tomatoes! :)
How many places have you lived in your life?
Too many. Here goes:
- Born in Baltimore MD and lived there with my mom..
- Moved to Upper Malboro (sp?) with mom and step-dad when they got married.
- Moved to Okinawa, Japan and lived in a townhouse
- Then moved on base (still in Okinawa)
- Moved to Poway, CA
- Then moved to Vista, CA... lived in an apartment
- Then moved to another apartment a few streets over.
- And then to another apartment, up the damn street.
- Senior year of high school, moved to Escondido, CA
- Moved out of my parent's house, moved in with my brother.
- Moved in with ex-boyfriend.
- Had to move because the house we lived in had been zoned as business property (aka it was demolished), so we moved closer to San Diego, CA
- Moved out when my roomate got arrested, moved in with ex's mom.
- Moved out when I got my own place.
- Moved into my friend Jess' apartment while we waited for housing allowance.
- Moved to Oceanside, CA for a year
- Moved to a bigger apartment in Fallbrook, CA, for about 7 months or so.
- Moved to Okinawa again!
Holy crap, I've lived in more places than I thought. Whew.
Leia is attacking my foot... rawr!
Tell us a little something about your first car. Do you have any photos you can share?
Submitted by tamara.
Nope, no photos. I had a 2-door, 1996 Hyundai Accent, manual transmission, in forest green
. My step-dad bought it for $500 for me, and I hated it at first, because I couldn't drive a damn manual transmission. When I finally figured it out - as in, I stopped stalling at every stop sign and red light, and stopped shifting too soon - it was great. I took it with me when I moved out, but my oh so wonderful step-dad decided it would be better for me to be without a car. Oh well. It was a great car, wherever it may be now. The picture to the right is what it looked like.
Onto other things. I have a cold, AGAIN. I have my appointment today, to to have the IUD removed and I am going to ask my doctor why in the world I am plagued with constant colds and sore throats. My sore throat went away... but only after I took the barbell out of my tongue. Peace out, tongue piercing. It was fun while it lasted, but it was getting to be a hassle with getting sick. The hole's still there but I can't put anything through it. So yeah. Going to figure out the reasoning for these godforsaken colds. I'm guessing it's allergies. I don't know.
I woke this morning around 8:30 - sleeping in for me compared to how early I've been getting up - with terrible, terrible cramps. I mean, it was almost as bad as labor pains. It was gas. GAS. It was bad enough, though, that walking hurt, or sitting hurt. I called Brandon at work - which believe me, I would not normally do, but I knew there was absolutely no way for me to take care of the baby while writhing in pain. Thankfully, Brandon was able to come home, took care of me (sort of), and took care of the baby.
I felt bad. I've never done that before, I always am able to put the pain aside and take care of the baby and myself, but this was just awful. Morgan came out about an hour after Brandon got home and said, "Why didn't you wake me up???" I didn't want to bother her... I mean, she's getting to see Aaron (her husband) since he's been stuck in the barracks for two weeks. Plus there wasn't much to do for me - I just couldn't do anything for ME.
Gas and menstrual cramps are not good. Thank god this IUD is coming out today. I just want it gone. I remember how badly I wanted it and now how badly I want it out. It's just not for some people. I don't think it's for people who have a history of bad cramps. My friend Jenna had the same problem - rip-roaring cramps, way worse than usual, which is pretty bad - ugh. And three periods in six weeks? K, no thanks. So, now I'm on low-dosage birth control and hopefully that'll keep me from getting pregnant, and also keep me from going a little insane. Regular birth control makes me an enormous bitch.
I should go get dressed and let Morgan know I'm going. She and Aaron are keeping an eye on the squirt.
Do you have any tattoos? If not, if you were going to get inked, what would you get?
I do have tattoos. I have three to date. The first one is an Amy Brown fairie (how cliche?) on the small of my back. Her wings are very big, very detailed, and very pretty. I was inked the day I turned 18, four years ago. It represents me moving out and moving on. I think it's gorgeous, still. I don't ever regret getting it!
The second tattoo is a crescent moon, with forget-me-nots wrapped around it. It is on my right shoulder blade. The moon is smiling. That one is for Becky. She is my bright moon on a dark night, and she always makes me smile. I will be adding her name to the inner crescent one of these days.
My third tattoo is kanji for 'eternal love'. On my left shoulder blade. This has been a toss-up, though. I've been told it means eternal love and I've been told it means eternal hurt or eternal pain. Both of these definitions work for me.
The next tattoo I'm working on is probably my most meaningful one. Two different orchids. One is light green, the other is a fuschia-pink, with curli-qs as vines. I did most of the work in Photoshop and printed it, and added leaves to the vines since I couldn't get them drawn correctly in PS. The green represents Brandon, the pink represents me. It'll be going on my left ankle. After all we have been through, we've persevered, and this will be a testament to that.
What do you do on Sunday?
Not much! We usually try to sleep in. I make breakfast, and depending on the weather or how we're feeling, we'll either go out or just stay in the house. Brandon gets a haircut around lunchtime at the barber shop (he has to, once a week). He gets his uniform ready for Monday and we'll just laze around the house. It's 'family day' for us but we've been a bit lazy lately about that.
